The final day of racing was everything the team had hoped for. After a week filled with challenges, repairs, and determination, Day 5 was smooth from start to finish. The solar car performed exactly as it was designed to, allowing the team to focus on what mattered most—reaching the finish line.
Solar Storms completed a record 86 miles on the final day, their longest distance of the race. They crossed the finish line with just 8% battery life remaining, cutting it close but proving their race strategy and energy management had paid off. After everything the team had overcome during the week, it was the perfect way to end the race.
That evening, everyone gathered for the final awards banquet. Solar Storms earned 3rd place in their division—an incredible accomplishment for a first-year team. Their division started with six teams, four successfully passed scrutineering, and only three completed race miles. Finishing on the podium was a testament to the team’s perseverance, teamwork, and countless hours of hard work.
As the week came to a close, the team was equal parts proud, exhausted, and relieved. They had worked harder than ever before, overcoming setbacks that would have ended the race for many teams. They left Texas with a trophy, lifelong memories, and the confidence that they belong in this competition.
The funny part? Even before the trailer was packed and the trip home began, conversations had already shifted to next year’s race. Ideas for improvements, ways to make the car faster and more efficient, and lessons learned were already being shared. After saying they couldn’t wait to be done with the car, they were already plotting and planning for next year.
That’s the spirit of Solar Storms—always looking toward the next challenge. Here’s to Year Two!
